Welcome to Found On The Ebays, where I find something I like for sale, and you look at it!

Kinja'd!!!

In honor of my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , today I am featuring a very nice example of a 1962 Chrysler Newport. The Newport was the entry level Chrysler, designed to fill the hole in the market from the now defunct DeSoto brand, and it came in tudor, sedan, or !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! varieties. The base engine was a 361 V8 rated at 265hp. The wagons were mostly optioned with the 383 V8, and the largest engine available was a 413 V8.

This car is said to have the 361 V8 with dual quad carbs. Now, I'm not 100% certain on this, but I don't think you could get a 361 with dual carbs, only the 413. The ebay ad also says these were added, so either way these weren't factory to this car.

(This car can consume small children, a fear of mine when I was growing up, death by 62 Newport)

On the inside, we have bench seats front and rear. This car also has a push button 3spd automatic transmission. Even for an entry level car, this interior still looks attractive. An entry level car today would just be a slab of grey plastic.

Kinja'd!!!

(This was always one of my favorite design features of the interior, a dome instrument cluster!)

Kinja'd!!!

(I'm willing to bet the seating surfaces aren't an original design or material, this car probably had a cloth/vinyl mix from the factory.)

In the trunk, we find the typical old American car layout. Enough room for about 8 bodies, a spare tire, and a picnic blanket acting as "trunk upholstery".

Kinja'd!!!

One thing you have to note about old American cars is, they are MASSIVE. I believe the tudor is 214" long, a 98+ panther platform car (which was the last body on frame full size sedan) is 212" long. It also has a 122" wheelbase, the shortest current generation F150 has a 125" wheelbase. I'm willing to bet that a smart car is as long as the trunk of this car.

Still, there is something to be said about older automotive design when even an entry level vehicle looked this stylish. 50 years later not many people would know this car was an entry level car, especially because Chrysler is supposed to be the top tier Mopar brand.

I think modern car designers could learn a little something about building true entry level cars that still look like a million bucks.

Kinja'd!!!

(This car is on ebay for $13,100, which is a bit of a bargain for a fully restored 60's cruiser. This car MSRP'd for less than $3000 dollars in 1962, which comes out to a little over $23,000 today. You can !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

the now defunct DeSoto brand

Outside that, the Newport '62 is one of my favorite lumpy not-sure-which-way-we're-going-styling Chrysler early 60s products, but is beat out by the '61 Fury.
